Project Description

At Chapelcross 132kv Substation, SES Ltd were asked to be a part of the replacement of T1 & T2 Transformers, which is scheduled to take place in three phases. Phase 1 being the replacement of T2, Phase 2 being the replacement of T1, and Phase 3 the disconnection of the existing T3 transformer from the system in order to enable the creation of a clean interconnector between Chapelcross and Dumfries. The project also involves the re-testing of the existing protections following the installation of the new transformers, which includes commissioning of new equipment, primary injection of the new CT circuits and functional testing of the tripping schemes, proving of alarms and commissioning of the tap-change equipment. The status of this project is ongoing in two separate parts, one circuit was completed in 2007 and another is due for completion by the end of December 2008.

Project Highlights

SES have worked well together with the civil contractor to overcome civil work issues, and have conquered problems due to poor weather and site shutdowns to get the project back on schedule. GT2 was completed safely, on time and without any disturbance to the critical circuit running to the West Coast main line, during 2007.

GT1 was completed during 2008.

Client Feedback

"I would just like to add my thanks to everyone involved for the great effort, particularly given the fact we accelerated the programme by 3 weeks."
