Project Description

Hinkley Point 275kV substation is an open terminal double busbar substation. Originally the substation was the Grid connection point for Hinkley "A" nuclear power station which is currently being decommissioned. However, the 275kV substation continues to provide station supplies to both the "A" and "B" nuclear sites. In addition there are 2 supergrid transformer connections to the 400kV substation, plus 2 Bridgewater circuits.

SES works on SGT6 Bay (T60) included the removal and disposal of redundant equipment; the renovation of the existing air ring; installation of one SF6 dead tank CB with integral control cubicle (MEPPI 275kV Dead Tank CB type SFMT); installation of one (yellow phase) CVT with support base; replacement of existing high level bay conductors, insulators, down droppers, fixings and connections between existing high level gantries; all earthing modifications and connections, both above and below ground with high frequency earthing for 1 no CVT; installation and connection of all necessary power, protection and control cabling; installation of the following relays/blocks in the panels; and greasing of the insulators to be carried out for new equipments.

SES works on Bridgewater 1 Bay (L35) included the removal and disposal of redundant equipment, the installation of 3 CVT's with support base, and the replacement of the existing high level bay conductors, insulators, down droppers, fixings and connections between the existing high level gantries.

Project Highlights

The project was completed safely, on time and within budget. SES worked hard to ensure excellent cooperation and liaison with all subcontractors.

Client Feedback

"We have been impressed with the quality of the work that you do, the safe way it is conducted and the considerable flexibility that your teams have demonstrated in the face of continued design and programme challenges. Your core site teams are highly competent and their presence reassures the Alliance site team that a good job will be done, especially where there has been continuity of resource from one project to the next."
